Stump grinding in Canberra, finished properly

Professional stump grinding in Canberra is step 2 of the tree removal process. Our grinder chews the stump and its major surface roots into mulch, typically 200 mm below ground level (deeper on request), leaving a bed of clean grindings you can rake out or reuse in the garden. Once the hole is backfilled you can lay turf, pave, build or replant as if the tree was never there.

Why grind the stump instead of leaving it?

  • No regrowth. Many species, including elms, eucalypts and robinias, sucker aggressively from a live stump for years. Grinding removes the tissue that drives regrowth.
  • No termites. Rotting stumps and roots are a magnet for white ants close to your home.
  • No trip hazard or mower damage, which matters for rentals, strata and commercial grounds with public liability exposure.
  • Reclaim the space. Garden beds, lawns, driveways and fence lines come back into use immediately.

Access is rarely a problem

With our small stump grinder designed to fit through a standard door frame, and the ability to work on slopes, backyard stumps in established Canberra suburbs are routine. On rural blocks around Sutton, Gundaroo, Gunning and Murrumbateman we handle everything from single paddock stumps to whole windbreak rows in one visit. Multiple stumps in one booking always price better than one at a time.

Before we grind

We check for underground services near the stump (irrigation, power to sheds, NBN and water) and talk through what you want left: grindings raked into the hole or removed entirely. If the tree is still standing, ask for a combined tree removal and stump grinding quote. Doing both in one mobilisation is the cheapest way to a completely clear site. Not sure whether an old tree needs to come out at all? An arborist assessment gives you a straight answer first.

Common Questions

Stump grinding questions, answered

How deep do you grind a stump?

Standard grinding goes 200 mm below ground level, which is enough for turf, garden beds and most landscaping. If you’re planning to pave, build or replant a tree in the same spot, tell us. We can grind deeper and chase major roots further.

Can you grind stumps in tight backyards?

Yes. Our equipment fits through standard door frames and side gates. Genuinely difficult access is rarely a deal-breaker. Send a photo with your enquiry and we’ll confirm before quoting.

What happens to the grindings?

Your choice. Most clients have us rake the grindings back into the hole, where they settle. Keen gardeners keep them as mulch, or we can remove them and backfill with soil for an instantly finished surface.

Will the tree grow back after grinding?

No. Before grinding, we will apply poison to the stump, which kills and removes the wood tissue that produces regrowth. This is why it is better than leaving a stump in the ground. Species like elms and poplars will otherwise sucker from the stump and roots for years.
